But from my viewings of these films I've noticed a DRASTIC change and unprecedented upgrade in the production values and techniques of Bolly movies. When it comes to Bollywood I've learnt to appreciate the good things from older movies and one of my favourite things about movies is its aesthetic value and presentation in which Bollywood has HEAVILY lacked in for decades compared to the Cinema of the rest of the world. I could say the same thing about K3G but it was more of a typical Karan Johar flick with a lot more soap opera content in it jsut because Karan Johar directed it and that's exactly what separates KHNH from the rest of the Dharma lot. Even at that time I could notice how 'ahead' was KHNH was when it came to how good and savvy it looked and sounded.

Anyways when I was kid I do remember having a DVD of only the song sequences from this movie and k3G on the same disc and I used to watch this shit almost everydays for perhaps a year or so. This has really become one of my favourite movies to come out of Bollywood and perhaps the best one I think to come from the Dharma folks. So I never saw KHNH in theaters and I was kid when when it came out and only saw it on TV growing up that too in fragments and not as a whole untile years later. Hey guys I am posting here after a LOOONG fucking time and I've always wanted to talk about this movie on such a level but never really got to, especially with people who actually cared! It’s a journey, but I’ve learnt to “hasso, jeeyo, muskurao” because “kya pata, kal ho na ho”. But because Aman is an core memory from my childhood, my comfort space, that shrinks a little every time I see him die on screen. At 21, I still cry when Aman dies, not because I want to be Naina or Gia or Jenny or Rohit. Today, I can assure you, these 18 years, I’ve seen Kal Ho Naa Ho every single year atLEAST once. I wanted to be Gia (not Naina) every single time- slowly adoring from afar. I cried every time Aman asked Gia to marry her, hoping it was me. I’d scratched out the 3 part movie (yes, earlier movies were divided into 3, genZ) CD’s from daily wear. I skipped meals if the DVD wasn’t playing. I have a deeply emotional connection with the memories of watching this movie. Maybe because the surroundings looked familiar to a 4 year old. Maybe it was because I could relate to it. I walked, talked and sang in Bollywood.īut Kal Ho Naa Ho- this one movie was my all time favourite. From dance-y songs to movies to sheer die hard love for Shahrukh Khan. Bollywood was really my only connection to India and boy, was it never lost. As a baby, my family and I had to move to Germany.
